Tea Profile
Pi Luo Chun is reputable for its fabulous appearance with its delicate white hairs, graced by its charming aroma. Pi Luo Chun literally means “Green Snail Spring”, as it is delicately rolled into a tight spiral snail shape, and is cropped early spring. Grown in Jiangsu Province, Pi Luo Chun is one of the ‘Ten Great Chinese Teas’.
Origin
Zhen Jun, author of tea encyclopedia Cha Shuo, ranked Pi Luo Chun first among Chinese green tea. It became very popular during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) and was selected as a Tribute Tea during the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911). Roleaf Pi Luo Chun is harvested from the Dong Ting Mountain in the surrounding area of China’s 3rd largest fresh water lake, Tai Hu (Tai Lake) in Jiangsu Province. The moderate climate, humid air and slightly acidic soil creates the ideal environment for growing small-leaved tea cultivar and fruit trees such as peach, plum and persimmon. This gives the Pi Luo Chun tea a unique floral aroma and a fruity flavor. The taller fruit trees which provide a shade for the teas from the summer heat and winter snow gives Pi Luo Chun their tender and delicate leaves.
Pi Luo Chun is also grown in Zhejiang and Sichuan province, but Dong Ting’s Pi Luo Chun is considered the best. It is highly regarded by Chinese tea experts, and being so delicate and tender, one kilogram of Dong Ting Pi Luo Chun consists of 14,000 to 15,000 tea shoots.
